Red Hat Linux 7.1

Red Hat Linux 7.1 contains the basics for setting up a Linux workstation or server. Ideal for the experienced user, this standard package gives you the essentials to upgrade or install new machines. Features new to this version include the Red Hat-tested 2.4 kernel, stateful firewalling capabilities using iptables, XFree86 4.0.3 for improved 3-D graphics, expanded USB support for storage, hot-pluggable devices, and the ability to easily set up and administer DNS, Apache, and printing services.

For developers, complete Web, mail, ftp, file, and print servers are included, along with multiple programming languages: C, C++, FORTRAN, Perl, Python, Tcl, and GCJ. There is an updated development toolchain (gcc 2.96-RH, gdb 5.0, glibc 2.2.2), and the popular Web application development tools PHP and mod_perl. This package comes with a 30-day subscription for one system to Red Hat Network Software Manager, which will give you access to Errata Alerts, RPM updates, and a free Red-Hat hat when you configure your system. You will also receive 30 days of Web-based installation support..../ Red Hat Linux 7.1 / red hat linux

Im a Linux change - Its astounding : Red Hat Linux 7.1

Yes, this release is definately a needful leap from 6.2, but still I wouldn't call it excellent (though, in contrast, I'd give win32 2 stars and MacOs 9.1 3.5). All of the mid/low level Gnu utilities work just fine, infact good than their Solaris 8 counterparts (in my humble opinion). It's the Ui level stuff that I still run into problem with, although it's much good than 6.2, where X would frost the whole law occasionally and wouldn't even let me open up an additional one virtual console to kill the defunct processes. Utilities like Glade have croaked with the occasional segmentation fault, and X will still sometimes frost on me (maybe It's something I could be doing wrong?), but I'm regularly able to get out of it without rebooting. I'm also having problem getting my Usb zip250 drive working (this isn't a major gripe for me, since other, industrial Oses have given me similar problems here). But in spite of all that, I had no problem getting sound to work, and I was able to get Mesa to build on my machine, and in no time I was writing tiny Glut programs to try it out. I'd like to point out that I tried the elaborate edition this time around, and found that It included a cd of non-free 'Enterprise Workstation Software' (or something) which I found to be unnecessary. Given the add-ons included with the elaborate addition, I think I could have gotten by with the standard. Oh, and in effect the only speculate that I got this distribution is that my current linux motor isn't connected to the internet currently, if it were, there'd in effect be no speculate to pay for an upgrade, It's all avalible online, and relatively easy to install.
